Susan Burke
INL Coordinator, Department of Environmental Quality
Susan's career in public service encompasses 17 years at the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) where she has played a key role in developing and implementing statewide programs designed to protect the quality of Idaho's ground, surface, and drinking water. Before moving into her administrative role, Susan represented DEQ in all manner of water quality issues as a Deputy Attorney General.
Since 2000, Susan has focused on developing a progressive pollutant trading program for Idaho. This effort has included drafting guidance documents, studying watersheds for trading potential, and collaborating with EPA on trading language for NPDES permits. Susan has also been a leader in coordinating enforcement actions for water quality programs and underground storage tank remediations.
Over the years, Susan has ushered through a number of significant rules to revise water quality standards, protect ground water quality, and regulate swine and poultry facilities in Idaho. A skilled negotiator, she has also successfully crafted and secured agreement among state and federal agencies and private industries on Memorandums of Understanding addressing controversial dairy and beef cattle issues.
Susan has a law degree from the University of Oregon with an emphasis in environmental studies.
Susan is originally from Chicago but much prefers living in the West.
